On Saturday, February 21, 2009, the 16-year-old was named Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix in front of a full house at the organization’s “Today’s Kids, Tomorrow’s Stars sponsored by UTI” event at the new Sheraton Phoenix Downtown.

“I think of the Boys & Girls Club as not my second home, but my first home,” says Breanna about having the Club as a constant foundation for support. “Without the Boys & Girls Club, I would not be where I am today, and for that, I thank them from the bottom of my heart.”

The Youth of the Year Award is the top honor the BGCMP can bestow on a Club member. Ten youth were already winners after being nominated by their local branches based upon their exemplary contributions to their community, school, family and local Club. Only one youth can represent the organization, and Breanna Corey’s outstanding character and involvement in the community and his Club has earned her that honor.

Through many ups and downs in her family life, Breanna Corey has built a will to succeed unlike most teenagers you will meet. Breanna considers herself blessed to have the constant support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix and considers the Club part of her family.

Having transitioned through various households, she has finally found a home with her biological father. She has used the experiences of other family members with substance abuse as a constant reminder of how even one poor decision could harm herself and those around her. Breanna has also used her own painful childhood experiences as a source of strength for her moral character and is determined to succeed.

“I came from a poor family where college was not an option to anyone who lived on the block,” says Breanna when thinking about her future goals. “The Club has opened my eyes to all the possibilities and options in life. College is more than just an option to me, it’s a necessity.”

After finishing high school, Breanna plans to attend the University of Arizona and pursue a law degree, and hopes to become a lawyer, prosecuting those who have done wrong. She is excited about this next chapter of her life and has maintained excellent grades, even while taking accelerated classes to help her transition into college.

At the Club, Breanna also discovered a passion for helping those in need and has volunteered more than 160 hours this year alone. Some of her volunteering projects include work at Glendale High School, St. Mary’s Food Bank and at her own Boys & Girls Club. She was recently elected as president of the Keystone Club, a leadership and community service group for teens at the Club.

The Club has been instrumental in helping her come out of her shell and today, as president of the Keystone Club; Breanna is responsible for a group of 14 teens. This leadership role has allowed Breanna to lead her peers and discuss important issues relating to teens.

“There is a sign I read at the Club that states ‘You will always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,’” says Breanna. “I love this saying because it is true and it is motivating. The Boys & Girls Club has changed my life forever in ways I never thought were possible. They have opened my eyes to all the possibilities and options in life.”

The 2009 Stars event also honored basketball great and Boys & Girls Clubs alumnus Shaquille O’Neal for his outstanding contributions to the community. O’Neal helped the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix kick off its “BE GRTEAT” campaign, and served as honorary chair for the star-studded event.

As the 2009 Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Youth of the Year, Breanna Corey will advance to the Arizona State Youth of the Year competition on April 21, 2009 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown for a shot at the Regional competition.

Every year more than 32,250 children benefit from after-school youth development programs, extended services and community support programs through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix’ ten clubhouses, dental clinic and outreach programs.
