Boys & Girls Club Kids to go Back-to-School Shopping

<p>The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Board of Directors will host its annual Back-to-School Shopping event on Wednesday, August 19 at Paradise Valley Mall. This year 120 kids will receive clothes and shoes and a backpack full of school supplies for the upcoming school-year thanks to Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Board Members. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</p><p>Kids from each our 12 clubhouses were selected based on their level of need. They will be paired with a board member who will take them to dinner and shopping for school clothes, shoes, and supplies just in time for the new school year. <br /><br />The event will take place on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. <strong>Media is invited to attend from 5:30-6:30 p.m</strong>. <p>(PHOENIX) &mdash; The Arizona Diamondbacks will honor Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson as part of Major League Baseball&rsquo;s Jackie Robinson Day when they host the St. Louis Cardinals at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday.</p><p>April 15th marks the anniversary of the former Brooklyn Dodger breaking baseball&rsquo;s color barrier in 1947. Now in its sixth year, the league-wide Jackie Robinson Day will be celebrated at each of the 15 home games played throughout the Major Leagues on Wednesday.</p><p>To honor the significance of Robinson, all D-backs players will wear Robinson&rsquo;s No. 42 during the game. After the game, the game-worn jerseys will be signed and auctioned off at various events to raise charitable funds for the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, as well as to increase awareness and raise funds for the Jackie Robinson Foundation.</p><p>In addition to highlighting Robinson&rsquo;s career and service to the league, the D-backs will award this year&rsquo;s Arizona Diamondbacks Jackie Robinson Lifetime Achievement Award to John Young and will recognize Jackie Robinson Foundation scholar Ashly Burch of Glendale, local African-American youth that were Boys &amp; Girls Club&rsquo;s 2009 Youth-of-the-Year, and representatives from the Arizona State University and University of Arizona&rsquo;s Black Alumni Associations during a pre-games ceremony.</p><p>Javone Craig, Sellam Meskel, Kandyce Miller, and Blaine Rutledge of the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix and Precious Wilson and Kevin Martinez of the Boys &amp; Girls Club of the East Valley will be recognized for their honor as Boys and Girls Club&rsquo;s Youth-of-the Year. Each honoree was selected by their individual branch based upon exemplary contributions to the community, school, family and local Club.
