Marcus Barnett Named 2010 Youth of the Year!

Marcus BarnettThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix is proud to announce the 2010 Youth of the Year, Marcus Barnett!

Marcus began attending the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix at the age of five. A shy, quiet boy, Marcus often kept to himself. One day a staff member introduced Marcus to the game of basketball. Soon after, he was hooked on the sport …and the Club!

“Basketball quickly became my anti-drug …and the Club became my safe place,” Marcus explains. “It has helped me stay away from the negative and focus on the positive things in life,” he says.

When he’s not on the court, Marcus can be found serving others. At the Club, he has participated in hundreds of volunteer projects over the years. Today Marcus is president of the Kieckhefer Keystone Club – a leadership development club for teens – and also volunteers at his church and school.

Stars 2010 NomineesMarcus is a dedicated student who maintains Honor Roll status and is a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, he plans to attend college to study psychology with the intent of someday becoming a family counselor. He also has dreams of attending law school and eventually becoming a judge.

Congratulations Marcus and all the outstanding Youth of the Year candidates!

Martin Luther King Day of Service

Teens“I have a dream!” Dr. King's words were an inspiration to many, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Keystone Club members. Keystone Club is a small group leadership development club for young people ages 14 to 18.

These words inspired members from all twelve Clubs to come together to participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

They started the day by beautifying their community, planting a remembrance cactus in the garden outside the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Administrative building, they ended the day by collaborating with Keystoners from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale for a day of diversity training and fun.

Volunteer of the Month - Toastmasters

For the past few years, members of Toastmasters International have volunteered their time, services and skills to help guide our Youth of the Year through a journey that eventually leads them to speak in front of 1,200 guests at the Today’s Kids, Tomorrow’s Stars event.

Bobbie O'Connell, Tobin Daily, Mary Lee Madison, Elaman Rodriguez, and Danny Valenzuela from Toastmasters were instrumental in the development of the Youth of the Year candidates' public speaking abilities and served as mentors throughout their "Journey".

Thank you to all the Toastmaster volunteers who have helped with this program over the years!
